I’d heard a lot of good things about Uncle Lim’s chicken rice. Sold only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, people have trekked from far and wide for it.

It was only a matter of time before I hauled my lazy ass down to East Croydon for a taste.

What did I think? Pretty authentic, the rice infused with stock and ginger, the chicken broiled and tender, the chilli sauce just perfect with a hint of sourness. The only thing missing was the soup. Why no soup? No idea, but I’d still go just for the chicken. And rice.

  1. oh man.. i’ve been dying to go.. went a few months ago on a Sunday at 1pm and they had run out of chicken rice!?!?

    • oh no! Long way to go to have it run out… although I have to say some of the curries looked amazing, and apparently the nasi lemak is huge (and delicious)! You have to go again, the chicken rice is good 🙂

  2. yeah.. i got the kway teow instead and also got an assortment of curries for takeaway for lunch the next day. Am planning to go back again soon and I might bring a couple of the boys along with me..

Woo! Thanks for trekking all the way out 🙂 I feel like their old chef has been on holiday (or at least I hope it’s a holiday..) for quite a while now. So if you liked this, imagine it like ten times better! I’ll let you know when that happens 😉

  5. I love that it is only sold three days a week. Sounds worth the trek!

  6. Ming: all the other dishes looked amazing too. There was an aubergine dish that made me drool.. literally!

Charmaine: thanks for taking me! It was well worth the journey hehehe… well when the chef is back, PUHLEASE let me know!

Gourmet Chick: Definitely! I’m infinitely lazy when it comes to travelling but this was totally worth it!

  7. Happily it’s only 20 minutes from my place. I do wish they did the soup too though.

  8. Wow, that’s some way to go for Chicken, it must be something special. Although I would be so disappointed if i went all that way and they had run out…

  9. Lizzie: how hard is it to make soup? Shouldn’t they already have it? Unless… they are using the stock for something else 🙁

Grubworm: damn right. You DO NOT want to be late.

  10. Chicken rice – only one of the things I ALWAYS make sure I eat when I go home….

And now I’m craving for some. Damn.

  11. You just pressed all my buttons at once. I need to go here; Hainanese Chicken Rice is one of my ultimate dishes.

Bit of a trek though… maybe I’ll see if I’ve got any friends who want to bop down to East Croydon…

  12. All singapore dish. Everyone’s fav. Looks too good and tempting.

  13. Had stop over in KL on way to see relatives in Australia and had a dish called Curry Laksa from a street vendor – for breakfast! – it was incredible, it’s a coconut flavoured noodle soup with massive prawns and chunky chicken pieces and beancurd – didn’t eat for rest of day. So Googled Malaysian food and found your comments when I got back to see if I could find it in a restaurant near me and saw your comments on Uncle Lim’s. Went to Uncle Lim’s website and it was there! So had to check out the restaurant and have the dish again. It was like being back in KL, the dish had the same rich gravy which, tho it is a coconut based dish, had the aftertaste of lemongrass. Wonderful, somewhere to take my lady and impress her!
