Update 4 February: and our winner is… Greedy Diva!
Congrats girlfriend! Send me your delivery address and a luscious box of Hotel Chocolat chocolates will be on their way to you!

Valentine’s day, a Hallmark day to rival any other. Or rather, to stampede on all others. I was once told that florists make more money on Valentine’s day, just this one day, than on every other day of the year combined. I mean, is that just insane? For a completely made up day?

While I’m not a frothing-at-the-mouth anti-Vday lunatic, I do believe that the day was created to take advantage of those blindly in love, laying duty in men’s hearts and desire in women’s, so that gifts are given, plus flowers, plus chocolates, plus a prerequisite card, plus plus plus. The blindness of love is a Godsend on this day, because without it, you would see that Hallmark had just yanked the biggest leg of all, pocketing billions upon billions, on this one day.

Having said all that, Valentine’s day does bring happiness to a significant number of people in this world, and no one will question that. Couples are loved up, and singles party on, on what is probably the easiest day of the year to spot fellow singles. So I don’t hate, not at all.

I’ll just eat my chocolate.

Hotel Chocolat have so kindly asked me to host another GIFTAWAY! because we do love gifting away here at thecattylife. I had the delectable pleasure of trying their Heart to Heart Goodie Bag, literally a bag full of good stuff like Milk Hearty Nibbles, a milk & white chocolate slab, praline and brownie heart milk chocolates, and caramel heart chocolates.

And now, you can too!

To possibly win a Heart to Heart Goodie Bag or something of equal deliciousness from their Valentines Day range, simply follow the instructions below and make sure you comment/tweet/stumble to your hearts content by midnight this Thursday 3 February. A winner will be picked at random and some luscious chocolates will be shot out on their way to you next week!

  1. Well I have to say I hate it lol, last 2 have been a disaster and this year im single, but going on holiday to the Maldives this Monday!! to escape it…… Only to find the entire island is going to be turned into, and I quote the hotels website “I magic candle lit evening of roses, kissing, cuddles and more romance than anyone can handle”

    THERES NO ESCAPE!!

    🙂

  2. We are on the fence about Valentines, we don’t go out for dinner to be in the company of nauseating couples but we do see it as an excuse to eat something extra nice (aren’t most festivals and special days for this?). So I buy red wine, maybe steak and always something chocolatey for afters.

You know Clintons do giant velour roses this year? *vom*

  3. I tweeted too by the way 🙂

  4. I can’t stand the way restaurants put on special menus with heart shaped chocolate puddings, but any extra excuse in life to receive flowers, eat chocolates and drink champagne is always alright with me.

  5. Great blog post!
I would love to win this for my OH. Valentine’s Day falls on my Mum’s birthday (and this year she’s 60) so he will be overlooked again. We’d wait until the weekend after Valentine’s Day, head out for dinner and then indulge in this prize at home.

  6. Nothing special for me on Valentine’s day this year. The advantage of being single – it takes off all the pressure… 😉 I’ll probably be sad & lonely & in the gym while everybody is enjoying great food with their oh… 😛 But generally, I quite fancy the idea of Valentine’s day. Romance & food, what’s not to like?

  8. I find Valentine’s day means much less to me when I am in a relationship. I would much rather my boyfriend bought me a much bigger and nicer bunch of flowers (for the same price) any other day of the year. We will be staying home to eat, but I think we might splash out on some tasty beef.

  9. I’ve never been a massive fan of Valentine’s Day but we always try to do something small. This year however we are off to New York over the valentine’s weekend. I’m quickly stamping out any suggestions that ‘proposal’ will be on the cards! 🙂

  10. Im against going to dinner on v-day. The menus are always crap, the servers are mad they are at work, and the experience is always rushed and horrible. I prefer to cook for my hubby on the special night, usually something like whore’s pasta (puttanesca) and broken artichoke salad just to keep the mood light and silly. There are 364 other days of the year that I find “I Love You’s” to be more meaningful.

  11. I don’t like Valentine’s Day – too many hearts and pink stuff everywhere! Having said this, pink chocolate hearts are something completely different 🙂

I’m sure I’ve ranted to you before as I do every year… I used to work in a florist as a part-time job during uni and V-day was the WORST! Yeah business was crazy busy on that one day but people get so ridiculous, demanding and rude. I hated it. You should treat your loved ones to chocolates and flowers everyday! =)

It’s a pain in the ass. But, last year, hubby wore his red union suit pajamas, cooked
some lobster, and for dessert he served chocolate-dipped strawberries and gave me a rose in a vase. It was a total surprise. But V-day isn’t something I normally
pay attention to. I resent ‘special’ days on the calendar which dictate that gifts must be given and that everybody’s gotta celebrate lest someone be disappointed
or hurt. Makes me want to puke.

  14. We don’t go in for valentine’s day, we say I love you all throughout the year and Valentine’s day just seems completely commercialised. It is good as a reminder not to take each other for granted so I’ll probably we whipping up some sinfully chocolately cake/dessert to spoil my partner with!

  15. Beautiful giveaway!
I’ve never been a massive fan of Valentines Day before, but recently I feel am being more and more drawn to it, because I feel it’s a reminder of the heart more than anything, and even if you don’t know that, it’s a good way to connect on that level, even with friends. I have been feeling drawn to share the love with my friends rather more.
    Thank you for the giveaway

  16. Oh chocolates! I do love chocolates.. I don’t like Valentines day as I think it’s stupid to only show you love someone on one day, but i would never say no to delicious chocolates!

  17. I’m in two ways about it as on one hand I think you should show the people around you that you love them everyday, or at least more than one day a year. Yet I also think it is very romantic to devote an entire day to do something special with/for someone. X

  18. Not sure, it’s a bit hammy nowadays. Working in retail means I’ve to start thinking about it from the beginning of Jan – seriously! :s

I’m sick of seeing “here’s an article about how to teach a man to buy lingerie” OI!! We’re very good at it thank you. All these curated “Buy this for your woman/man” collections – why, oh why would the love of my life thank me (or stay with me) if I bought her a keyring…even if it’s got Tiffany’s stamped on it. Proper tack!

Stay away from the crappy gifts; LOVE carved out of wood, anything with a name on it or a bottle opener for him. Let’s here more romantic stories like a surprise champagne picnic at Greenwich/Ally Pally to watch the sunrise.

By the time V day comes round I’ve had the life drained out of me…so…I NEED SOME CHOCOLATE!!! pretty please?

  19. Not an entry but I just wanted to say that its sucha cute looking chocolate Box!

  20. My Valentine’s Days would probably be pretty sad if it weren’t for my amazing dad who always gets me chocolates… I can’t say I’m a fan of the day in general, I just like the chocolate.
