Today is my last day in Brisbane! And so it seems appropriate that I share with you one of my favourite places in this entire city: Cold Rock Ice Creamery. They have macadamia nut ice cream. They have cookie dough. They smash it together. LOVE.

How does it work exactly? Well, it’s not too complicated. Following Cold Rock’s three step mantra, you first:

1. Choose it.

Choose an ice cream flavour from their varied and wondrous selection. My go-to is macadamia nut, but they also have such awesomeness as donut flavoured ice cream, oh yes they do.

2. Mix it.

You then choose a mixer and honestly, they have everything. M&M’s, freckles, snakes, gummi bears, fruits, nuts, chocolate bars, tim tams! You name it, they got it. Oh a note of warning: don’t choose the gummi bears cos they go hard in the ice cream.

The only ONLY mix-in that I ever get (and have been known to throw a mini tantrum or two if they’re out) is cookie dough. Big, gooey chunks of uncooked, delicious cookie dough… *heaven*

3. Smash it.

This is the fun part but sadly, they won’t let me do it myself. A very experienced, very professional Cold Rock Ice Creamer will take your choice of mix-in and smash it into your ice cream.

And smash it some more.

And squish it.

And mash and pound and pulp it.

And then ever so delicately, turn it into a ball of ice cream and serve it to you in a cup or waffle cone.

It’s amazing. If you haven’t tried it, you don’t know what you’re missing.

And who did I go to Cold Rock with? Well, you can call me a nerd (because lord knows I am), but I went with Kate, my English teacher from high school. Yes I said high school and yes, after 16 years I am still friends with my English teacher 🙂

Oh and the other one is Shari. Y’all remember Shari, right?

ps. I think the concept is the same as Cold Stone Creamery (hmmm wonder who happened first?) but Cold Rock isn’t as posh and I like that 🙂

pps. Ice cream is totally recovery food.

ppps. Flying out at 11pm tonight. Happy to see Panu again, sad to leave my parents…

pppps. but before I go, mum’s cooking my all time favourite hawker dish for lunch – Penang hokkien mee!
