I’m not sure if it’s public knowledge or relevant knowledge or even remotely interesting to any of you. I think maybe it’s one of those irrelevant pieces of factoids that I seem to regularly force upon you guys, but I’m giving it to you anyway. Over a decade ago – woah wait, over a decade ago? How old am I? Older than I look, is the right answer and every time I say that out loud, I feel the muscles tighten around my templates from fear, anxiety and hm, maybe it’s actually creating new wrinkles *ack!* but that’s for a-whole-nother blog post.

A post for when I have a glass of several bottles of wine with me.

But I digress.

So. Over a decade ago *breathe* I left Brisbane bright four eyed and bushy tailed eyebrowed (true stories. both of them) to live in another state and somehow ended up in Perth (now that is really for another blog post, one that will stay in draft for eternity). Yes, Perth. All the way over there on the west coast of Australia.

Life in Perth was fine and I ended up living there for six years, graduating from university and developing some of the best friendships that I have to this day. Ok, ok, I’ll save you the nauseating trip down memory lane and get to the point, shall I?

There are lots of wonderful things about Perth. LOTS. But one of the best, and something I always go back for, are waffles at Geláre Café. In fact, Geláre’s waffles are so fantastic that when I moved to Europe and went to Belgium, oh my god was I disappointed with the world famous Belgian waffles.

And for once, I can pin point exactly why they are so goddamn awesome. First, it’s the squidgy waffle. It’s not the hard hold-like-a-biscuit type of waffle you get in Europe. It’s fluffy and soft and perfect for soaking up the gallons of ice cream and maple syrup. Secondly, it’s the ice cream. Geláre makes their own luscious Italian style ice cream which is thick and delicious in all the right ways.

Sigh, I love Geláre’s waffles. But alas, they are not here in Sydney.

They are however in Perth (all over the damn city like a rash), Melbourne and there’s even one in Brisbane now and all I want to say is… Geláre, when are you coming to Sydney????

9 Thoughts on “Geláre: waffles TO DIE FOR (when are you coming to Sydney?!)

  1. Consider yourself lucky. At least your ‘foodie-wants’ are in the same country. Mine are on different continents (Din Tai Fung for XLB and In N Out for burgers).

We’ve got quite a few Gelare cafe’s in melb so and visit us here lol and i think it’s closer than Perth 🙂

Have you tried the waffles from Movenpick? I think they’re good too hehe ~

  3. Never heard of this place before but will have to keep my eyes peeled for it in Melb

  4. I love waffles and one that soaks up the syrup sounds perfect!

  5. Mr Noodles: Ahhhh yes sometimes I’m lucky but other times.. Shake Shack and KyoChon! Both in NYC!! ARGH!

    Paula: indeed 😀

Flower: I shall definitely go to Gelare in Melbourne! I haven’t tried Movenpick waffles.. Lindt waffles are also not bad but not quite as awesome as Gelare!

Gourmet Chick: Definitely check it out and lemme know what you think!

jenny: Who doesn’t love waffles?? 😀

  6. Ugh LOVE waffles! Never been to Perth (shock, I know) but really want to go. It looks so pretty and chilled

  7. You know, I haven’t eaten waffles since I went to Brussels 4 years (or was it 5 years?) ago. Might have something to do with the fact that I managed to gain TWO kg in THREE short days, lol… I think I overdosed a little bit too much on waffles during the trip, but maybe it’s time to get reintroduced to the waffle because damn that looks good!

  8. Nic: Haha Perth is all right… a little far away maybe? Gelare is also in Melb so check it out if you go there.

Su-yin: Belgian waffles are totally overrated though, don’t have those!! I like squidgy waffles… you’ll have to try these one day.
