Saturday was a bit of an extremes kinda day. We bought some groooooovy bright red retro bar stools for the apartment (win!) then ate some pretty good Malaysian food for lunch (win!) and then… some biatch went and ran into the side of my car (lose). Don’t worry, Panu and I are both fine but my Marvin! My near-new Marvin. He’s now all injured down the left side and has to go off to car hospital to get all fixed up.

Sigh. Why. Why are there such losers on the road.

Anyhow, before my day went pear shaped, we had lunch at Sassy’s Red in the foodcourt up on Level 5 in Westfield Sydney. I’ve always wanted to try Sassy’s Red (I say always like I’ve been wanting to do this for an eternity but really, I only spotted them like two months ago) because I love Chinta Ria, their mama restaurant in Darling Harbour, although it’s errr, a little pricey.

When I saw that Sassy’s Red had fresh sugar cane juice, I was S-O-L-D.

I had the Chinta laksa [top] which was pretty good. Lots of chicken and fish cakes and whatnot. What I loved about the laksa is the thick gloopy soup. I hate watery laksas. Panu had something called “Billie” which basically is fried vermicelli noodles or “bee hoon”. What the heck is billie? I’ve never heard that name before but anyway… I’m also not the best specimen of a Malaysian person.

Here’s the menu if you want to squint. Hm. I kind of feel like eating loh bak right now.

So. Despite the pear shaped afternoon, I’m still super pleased with the red bar stools we bought from Freedom. We got two of these and just to mismatch and be a little funky, we got two of these. The apartment looks awesome with a splash of colour and you know what? Everything tastes better on red 😉

Sassy's Red on Urbanspoon

Update 18 Oct 2011 – Sassy’s Red explains all on twitter:

22 Thoughts on “Sassy’s Red. Red bar stools. Things always taste better on red.

  1. Aww that sucks about your car but those red bar stools are AMAZING. Love the splash of colour! And yay for fresh sugar cane juice 🙂

  2. I wonder if Billie has something to doing with the “In the Mood For Love” movie on which the theme of the restaurant upstairs (you know, the Temple of Love or whatever it’s called) is built. Otherwise, it might just be an idiosyncratic detail for the owner, who also named ondeh-ondeh as “On me on me all day” or something similar, right? Sorry to hear about Marvin – hope the car doctor looks after him.

I feel like eating loh bak right now too! Your fault 😛

  3. i’ve never heard of ‘Billie’ before – it looks a bit like Singapore noodles! Hope Marvin gets well soon.

      Mr Noodles is right.
The dish “Billie” is Singapore Bee Hoon (aka Mee Hoon or Singapore Noodles).
“B H” stands for Billie Holiday, one of the favourite singers of the owner Simon Goh.
Just like Sassy’s Red is named after an American jazz singer, “Sassy” Sarah Lois Vaughan.

  4. Panu’s looked a bit carby 😉

  5. Stink one, poor Marvin! But you’ll have nice chairs to lament in ;P

  6. Oh no! Poor car… at least you can look on the bright side – those chairs! <3

  7. OH NO! Your poor car! Hope you’re ok… 🙁

  8. Steph: I know, I love fresh sugar cane juice. There’s a place under Wynyard that does it too and for cheap! 😀

Adam: LOL, you know way more than me there… what intriguing names he gives his dishes, I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing! I still haven’t had my loh bak fix. Argh!

Mr Noodles: well if YOU haven’t heard of it, they totally made it up 😉

    rob: LOL, cheat weekend!!!!!

Sasa: I know. And I did.

Tina: Haha yeah, love my chairs. At least something brightened the day, right?

jenny: Yep, we’re both fine. But poor Marvin!

  9. Ooh what great chairs! And at least they brightened up the afternoon! 🙂

  10. That sux about Marvin 🙁 He’ll be good as new once he comes back from the car hospital though.
On the plus side – I adore those stools!!!

  11. Lorraine: And they brighten up my apartment! 😀

Nic: I know 🙁 poor baby! He’s only going in this week Thursday.. hope he doesn’t have to be there too long!

  12. Love fresh sugar cane juice. Sometimes available at markets, but always something I get when visiting family in Hong Kong – hot version in winter, chilled for summer.

Poor Marvin =( Hope you get him back all sparkly and shiny soon!

  13. The bee hoon with sambal is really awesome but what is even better is the “Hotel fried rice” which is not on the menu. I love the lobak as well because it is so crispy and fragrant!

  14. Rita: Me too!!! You can get a fresh squeezed-on-the-spot one in Wynyard for like $3! I only like the chilled version though heh.

ChopinandMysaucepan: ANYTHING is awesome with sambal!

  15. Oh nooo poor Marvin. Hopefully he’s all fixed up now. I haven’t had sugarcane juice (or as I call it, ‘air tebu’ in AGES!) Really really want some now.

    Loving the stools! 🙂

  16. Your apartment (that kitchen bit where we can see anyway) is deelish! That red /white combo is smashing. Envy is red, not green!

  17. Su-yin: You haven’t?? Is there no where that does sugarcane juice in London? Man, I didn’t even realise that!

Judy: Thanks!! I love our apartment.. it’s not big but it’s perfect for us 🙂

  18. Great apartment! Sad to hear about marvin. Marvin aside, sounds like you’re settling back into Syd v nicely. Off to shanghai tmrw! x

  19. Never tried loh bak but that looks delicious!
