If I was searching for the tallest burger in Sydney, this monstrosity from The Local Taphouse in Darlinghurst would have won hands down. I mean, just look at it. Look. At. It. The beef patty on its own is already like, I don’t know for sure but I’m going to say it’s 200-250 grams worth of beef there, and then they top it with the two hugest onion rings to have ever graced this planet. Puts them HJ’s onion rings (which I love) to shame.

But, as luck would have it, I’m not actually searching for the tallest burger in Sydney.

I’m searching for the best. And still am.

There were a couple of fundamental flaws with this burger. Well, aside from the fact that I like a burger that I can actually get my mouth around, but that was resolved with a quick removal of the onion rings. See? Normal looking burger:

So the first flaw, and one which I think it more or less unforgivable, is that… there is no cheese in the burger. You read right, no cheese. No cheese no love!

Secondly, the patty was honestly far too thick. And I know there are fans of big, thick, heavy patties out there, but I for one would prefer a thinner patty – still juicy, but something that complements the rest of the burger, not a beef flavour punch that bullies all other flavours into oblivion.

While they got a bunch of other stuff right, like the bun was soft and perfect, and the sides of potato and sweet potato wedges rocked, I just couldn’t really get past the lack of cheese.

And the onion rings? They were great! But I’m not sure why they come in the burger. Are you supposed to have them with? And if so, how do you physically do that?

The search continues.

11 Thoughts on “The Local Taphouse: seriously, how TALL is this burger?

  1. Erm, that’s ridiculous. How was the meat though? Juicy?

  2. Gosh that really is a TALL burger! I don’t think anyone could put that burger into their mouths LOL but i agree it’s not really a burger without cheese! I love my cheese πŸ˜›

  3. That is seriously a tall burger. I can’t even put a normal sized burger into my mouth properly let alone this one…but agree on the lack of cheese…such a shame!

  4. It’s not the size that counts πŸ˜‰ Cheeseless = unforgivable!

  5. Hi,
This link was just sent to me by the owner of the Local Taphouse. I am the head chef at darlinghurst and can tell you with 100% certainty that the yellow object oozing out the side of the burger in all your pics is a combination of mozzarella and gruyere cheeses that we put a ball of INSIDE the patty as we make them… I wouldn’t dare produce a burger without cheese especially in a venue that specialises in beer and food.. cheese is the ultimate beer match, look at pizza! We do have some customers (and staff) who can get their mouths around those burgers with a bit of creative crushing however yes, the onion rings in the burger are purely a first impression wow factor for those of us with normal sized mouths. Good luck in the search for your perfect burger! Just like to mention that we won ‘best burgers in nsw’ from the SMH good pub food guide this year πŸ˜‰ I will make sure a little extra cheesy goodness goes in the burgers from now on and if you come back to our restaurant and have any other creative criticism please send me an email on davidt@thelocal.com.au so I can continue to improve the food we are producing. Thanks, Dave

    • Hi David!

I really appreciate you getting in contact here! Hm, maybe there wasn’t enough of the cheesy goodness because all of my dining buddies agreed it didn’t taste like there was any cheese. So more cheesy goodness wouldn’t go astray I’m sure πŸ™‚ Congrats on your win as the best burger in NSW… that’s a great achievement! I guess it is all very subjective this “best burger” thing and I’m just after a very simple non-gourmet burger. Thanks for taking the time to comment πŸ™‚

      • Just a little side note, we have been trialling a pulled pork ‘slider’ (mini burger) and due to the success of them we are going to start doing all our 4 burgers and homemade chilli, CHEESE dogs in miniature size in the near future, there will also be a tasting paddle of all 5 for those with a big hunger and small mouths πŸ˜‰ Keep up the search, i’ll be following closely! Dave
