Ramen in salt flavoured pork soup with roast pork, shallots & sesame seeds

I’ve been wanting to go to Ryo’s for a long long long time. But you know, it’s on the other side of the bridge and if there’s one thing I am, it’s lazy. So, really, it’s all my own fault. Two weeks ago, I finally organised a bunch of us to go. We arrived at 1.30pm and lo’ and behold, the rumours were true: not just that there would be a queue but scarily, they would run out of broth. And sure as heck, they ran out of broth.

So this time around, we went at midday. Before midday even. There was still a queue but I’ll be damned if they ran out of broth.

Ryo’s is teeny tiny, seating no more than 30 people, is my guess. They have a menu full of ramens in various broths, curries and the mildly fascinating “miso bolognese” which I didn’t try, but still want to.ย I checked out their “Ranking Top 5” list and ordered the No. 1 (top photo).

It was pretty damn good. The noodles were spongy and squidgy (not really sure if those are appetising terms but I’m just calling it like I see it) and the broth is basically a meal on its own.ย Fragrant, tasty, savoury, delicious. The bowl didn’t look enormous, but it was surprisingly filling, although the greedy amongst us can still order extra noodles for a couple of dollars.

We also shared some kimchi (we ordered two, but they’d run out and only had enough for one tiny serve) and some fried chicken. OH MY GOD the fried chicken. YUM.

I haven’t been to Tokyo so can’t compare Ryo’s ramen to the “real deal”, but I hear it’s pretty darn close. I’m yet to try Gumshara’s as well (which is just in Chinatown so I can’t even pull the lazy card), but I think I might come back and check out the miso bolognese next ๐Ÿ™‚

11 Thoughts on “Ryo’s: yes I ventured north just for ramen

  1. Yeah this place is pretty legendary! Hazubando loves it, me not so much ๐Ÿ˜‰ Next time you’re on the RIGHT side of the bridge, venture out to the beaches too! x

  2. Crossing that bridge is like an overseas trip sometimes…but the end result looks worth it. Bummer they ran out of broth on the first visit.

  3. I use to come here all the time for their Tokyo ramen which is the best in Sydney. But then i got sick of driving all the way there so now I usually head to the much more local Zenya in Eastwood. Ryo’s is brilliant but not brilliant enough to warrant driving for nearly an hour when Eastwood is only 20 minutes away lol.

  4. Maria: Haha yes, since it’s so far to venture north of the bridge, I may as well go all the way! You never know, maybe next time I will ๐Ÿ˜‰

Miss Piggy: I know, but going at 12 is the best idea ever. Short-ish queue and broth! Although, they were out of kimchi already, WTF?

Karen: Yes, I’d take the 20 min option haha. I should try Gumshara it’s much closer to me!

  5. We went here a while ago when we lived in Cammeray and werent too impressed. I’d love to give it another shot but its a lot further away now ๐Ÿ™

Oooh I love ramen! There’s a few new ramen places in London you will have to try!

  7. Nic: Well, a few people have tweeted me that they like Gumshara too so maybe you can just go to that. It’s easier to get to ๐Ÿ™‚

Jenny: I’ve heard! Maybe I will in Dec ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. i’m still yet to try Ryo’s legendary ramen. same old lazy card too! but it definately looks good, must visit there soon!

  9. Ha! It’s not that much of an effort is it to go North side?

  10. procrastination…. on my list for the longest time ever… need to get my butt down and SOON
