milo lactation cookies

“Welcome to the world, beautiful baby boy”, reads the card. What it omits to say is “welcome to the world, a world full of unsolicited advice, beautiful baby boy”. Much like the urban myth that stress induces labour, this too holds true. The undeniable fact that having a baby opens the flood gates for one and all to tell you how to look after your baby and how to look after yourself (because clearly you’ve failed for the past three decades to do the latter).

He looks too cold; he looks too warm; he’s too thin; he weighs how much? he’s too fat; you’re too thin; you’re too fat; your hair needs a wash; brush his scalp; don’t brush his scalp; he needs pants; he must be swaddled; what do you mean he doesn’t like to be swaddled? all babies like to be swaddled; is he yellow? he’s jaundiced (actually, he’s half Asian)… and for real this one I got from a total stranger last week:

“His socks are falling off, you should buy ones that fit”

OMG. F*CK OFF HIS SOCKS ARE NOT FALLING OFF. AND THEY FIT JUST F**KING FINE. Bitch.

But thankfully, the universe is also full of good advice and ideas. Like the best advice ever? BUY AN ERGO CARRIER. Second best advice ever? To boost lactation, make these milo ‘lactation’ cookies. I mean, really, they’re milo cookies (yum) under the guise of also being good for lactation, hence good for you and baby! No complaints from me!

Thank you Suz for sharing the recipe. I love it 🙂

ps. I bought the key ingredients (brewer’s yeast and flaxseed meal) from GNC.

pps. You can also enjoy these cookies if you’re not lactating. Panu’s eaten a bunch and as far as I can see, he hasn’t grown moobs.

ppps. I don’t really know for sure if they’ve improved my lactation. But they taste good!

Milo ‘lactation’ cookies
1 cup self-raising flour
2 cups oats
1 cup brown sugar, lightly packed
1 cup butter, softened
2 eggs
3 tablespoons flaxseed meal
4 tablespoons brewers yeast
4 tablespoons water
2 tablespoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup Milo
1 cup chocolate chips
  1. Preheat oven to 180°C/355°F.
  2. In a mixing bowl, beat the butter and the sugar for 2-3 minutes. Add the vanilla extract and eggs and beat for another 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add the remaining ingredients, mix well with a wooden spoon.
  4. Roll small balls using a spoon and bake for 10-12 minutes.
  5. Once baked, let cool on tray before storing in an air tight container.
Full recipe makes about 50 cookies. You can freeze the dough to use at a later time.

10 Thoughts on “recipe | milo ‘lactation’ cookies

  1. Ah… I had it all backwards I see… These sound delicious. What sort of cookies are they? Crunchy? Chewy? Cakey?

    • Did you think they were made with breast milk?! Lol!

I’ve made them soft as I like soft cookies. I suppose a longer bake time would make them crunchier?

  2. haha I had to laugh at all the post scripts! I can’t believe you have strangers trying to tell you what to do – how rude! I think I’d go crazy from all the unsolicited parenting advice but judging from these cookies it looks like you know perfectly well how to look after yourself and bub 🙂

  3. Really disappointed in these

  4. Yep gotta love that unsolicited advice. I never actually used lactation cookies but maybe it’s not too late since they look pretty damn tasty. Any excuse for a cookie!

  5. haha I hope these cookies made all those comments go away, I can imagine that everyone wants to give their two cents on what you should/shouldn’t do!

  6. BAHAHAHAHA!! Seriously, socks?!?

    Some of my faves:

“He looks like he’s constipated.” (No, he’s being breastfed and poos ALL THE TIME.)

“He looks like he has wind.” (How the f**k can you see wind?!)

*high five* I think we’re both doing fine =)

  7. Ergo Baby Carrier is really a life saver! We have one too! Adam is almost 9 months old now and we love carrying him around! Although he gets heavier day by day so it’s easier for dad to carry him! 🙂
