I had a long week last week. Early mornings, late nights, six hours of back to back calls on Valentine’s night. Yep, it was one of those weeks. When the clock struck 6pm on Friday, I was happy enough to just go home and sleep, but Panu suggested out of the blue that he take me to dinner at Saké Restaurant instead.

Goma street: caramelised white chocolate, sesame ice cream

Last week was full of massive celebrations. I’d survived two weeks of work (which was not easy!), my family was in town, Panu finished studying (ready to make us millions now) and oh yes, we were also celebrating the fact that we got married. But mainly, I was excited to have family in town because that meant quality time with the queen of cuteness herself aka my niece.

We ate. Yes, we ate a lot all week. And amongst the gluttony was one very civilised, extremely enjoyable meal at Sokyo.

Because most of our meals in NYC were allocated to the act of burger-eating, we didn’t have much time left for pizza-eating. We had one meal to fill, and tossing up between Lombardi’s (which I’ve been to) and Don Antonio by Starita, we chose ol’ Don Antonio because a) we both hadn’t been before, b) the queue at Lombardi’s is insane at any time of the day and c) Don Antonio does a FRIED PIZZA.

I didn’t know what a fried pizza would taste like, but I guess there is no better time to find out!

Usually when somebody points you in the direction of a bar that sells food – all their food – for $4.95, you kind of expect (a) rubbish food (b) rubbish service (c) probably cheap drinks (d) all of the above. We went to El Furniture Warehouse (or “El Furny”) on a rec from a local, and really didn’t expect anything great.

Well, you know the awesome thing about low expectations? When it turns out good, you’re blown away.

It has been 19 days since my last blog post. This is some kind of obscene record.
