My friendships are the foundation of my life. Having come from an enormous family ~ well, my immediate family is small (and I cherish them so!) but coming from a large extended family where I have over a hundred first cousins, for me, blood is not always thicker than water.

I moved out of home and away from my family over a decade ago (I just felt a new wrinkle burrow itself into my forehead) and though I’m ever so slightly obsessively-compulsively-fiercely independent, my friends are my life source; they’ve been with me through the lowest of lows and highest of highs. We’ve laughed and cried ~ thankfully more laughs than cries ~ and while it’s been difficult with us all scattered across the globe, I’ve got most of my girlfriends with me in London right now, a rarity I know, and believe me when I say I appreciate it more than you can imagine.

Last Thursday, April 8, was the auspicious day that was Panu’s birthday. I was still suffering from the horrid stomach bug so he went out for drinks with his buddies and I stayed at home and watched Brokeback Mountain ~ my first time and dude, it’s a good movie. Sad, but good.

Though I missed the festivities, I wasn’t about to let an occasion pass me by without celebrating with some form of eating so I resigned myself to get better by Saturday, when we had reservations at Hibiscus to properly celebrate his birthday.

My grandfather, my “ah gong”. I don’t really know how to start this post, except to say that every single year at Chinese New Year, I miss my ah gong more than you’d expect and surprisingly, more than even I expect.

I never knew him very well ~ I was born in Australia, but we moved back to Malaysia when I was a wee bundle of fat rolls, because he was old and his health was ailing. He passed away in December 1986. I had just turned seven.
